Dynamics GP to Business Central Migration

In June 2025, Microsoft announced that support and product updates for Microsoft Dynamics GP will officially end on April 30th, 2031. This milestone is prompting many organizations to reassess their systems and ensure they’re equipped for the future.

Today’s business environment moves fast. Leaders need tools that help them stay competitive, accelerate growth, improve profitability, and build long‑term resilience. Microsoft’s answer to these evolving needs is Dynamics 365 Business Central — a modern, cloud‑based ERP designed for the new era of AI‑powered business.

Business Central isn’t just an upgrade; it’s a next‑generation platform built to streamline operations, enhance visibility, and scale with your organization. It’s also the destination for the majority of Dynamics GP customers who have already migrated or are actively planning their transition.

Although Dynamics GP and Dynamics 365 Business Central belong to the same Microsoft ERP family, they are fundamentally different products. Moving from GP to Business Central requires thoughtful planning, structured testing, and expert guidance to ensure a smooth transition.

Why Migrate to Dynamics 365 business Central?

Organizations running legacy Dynamics GP should consider migrating to Dynamics 365 Business Central as part of a broader modernization strategy.

  • Modernize core operations. Business Central is a comprehensive cloud ERP solution spanning finance, operations, inventory, sales, service, manufacturing, and projects.
  • Leverage AI and automation. Built-in AI capabilities help automate routine tasks, improve customer service, and support more informed decision-making.
  • Stay current without disruption. Continuous updates help reduce the need for large, costly upgrade cycles while improving performance, security, and functionality over time.
  • Connect across Microsoft tools. Deep integration with Microsoft 365, Teams, Outlook, Power Platform, and Azure enables connected workflows and real-time insights.
  • Reduce IT complexity. Moving to the cloud reduces the burden of managing infrastructure, backups, patches, and upgrades while improving security, scalability, and resilience.
  • Standardize on a modern ERP platform. For organizations operating across multiple legacy systems or business units, Business Central can help simplify operations and create a more connected foundation for future growth.

Migrating to Business Central

The first step is to work with a Microsoft partner like BizTechnologies to assess the current environment, including customizations, integrations, data, reporting needs, security requirements, and business processes.

From there, together you can define the right migration approach, timeline, and implementation strategy based on current environment and business goals.

A typical migration plan includes:

  • Assess and plan: Evaluate current ERP version, customizations, integrations, reporting, and business requirements.
  • Prepare the environment: Identify upgrade paths and determine how customizations will be handled.
  • Move and validate data in a test environment: Migrate core business data using the migration tool, validate accuracy of the migration, and test business processes.
  • Enable users and optimize: Configure roles, reporting, and integrations while training users.
  • Train the users: You are moving to a completely new product. Your users will need to be trained on the day-to-day business process
  • Final migration and go live: Here, your data is once again migrated over a weeken, bringing over your master data, open transactions and history supported by the migration tool.
  • Go live with confidence: Transition to the cloud environment and establish a foundation for ongoing innovation.

Dynamics GP - Bill of Lading AddIn

Bill of Lading (BOL) behaves as a natural extension of Microsoft Dynamics GP and creates a shipping document to the freight carrier combining orders/invoices. It provides standardization to ensure that the shipper, the freight carrier, and the customer (the consignee) are all getting the information they need to process goods through the supply chain. It is VICS (Voluntary Inter-Industry Commerce Standards) compatible and adheres to its basic guidelines.

The BOL navigates and behaves like Dynamics GP screens and can be launched from within the additional menu selection of the Sales Order Entry screen. This greatly simplifies
getting users trained on the product as they are already familiar with the Dynamics GP interface. Order and Invoice information available within Sales Order Processing can be selected into the BOL without having to re-key this into a separate system.

BILL OF LADING (BOL) KEY FEATURES

  • Seamless integration into Dynamics GP
  • Create BOL from either Invoice/ Sales Order
  • Include multiple invoices or sales orders
  • Combine shipments and palletize
  • Compute shipment weights for carrier
  • Include Pallet weights in shipment weights
  • Print VICS compatible BOL in Microsoft Word
  • Supplemental BOL for additional pages
  • Prints 3 of 9 barcodes for BOL numbers
  • Option to Print Master BOL

Supports GP versions up to 2018.

Dynamics GP AP Import Add In

Dynamics GP Accounts Payable Import AddIn is a granular add in to Great Plains that allows you to import payables transactions through a spreadsheet.  This is useful to import bank transactions or specific payables transactions from vendor portals.

The import screen is a simple screen that allows you to select an Excel spreadsheet and save the transactions into an unposted batch.  The import matches the vendor in GP and books the amount into the purchase account defined on the vendor account screen.
